Timau-Chogoria – 7 Days Mount Kenya Hiking Timau-Chogoria Route
Day 1
Leave Nairobi at 8.00 am and drive to Mountain Rock Hotel in
Nanyuki for lunch. The afternoon can be used for an optional
visit to the Sweet Waters game reserve or to the cave
hideouts of the Mau Mau freedom fighters during Kenya's
struggle for independence.
Day 2
After a breakfast you continue northwestwards crossing the
equator and on to the School of Adventure (70 km), the base
of your Mt. Kenya trail at 2900m. Here you meet with guides/
porters and start your climb at 11.30 am.
The 5 hours hike take you to Marania campsite at
(3300m) in middle of the moorland leaving behind a beautiful
forest inhabited by a variety of wildlife. Overnight will be
in a fly camp.
Day 3
After breakfast you continue with the climb heading for
Major's Camp (4000m ). Your path will be surrounded by
plenty of Senecia and Lobelia. Lunch will be at Allan's
point. The hike takes about 6 hours. Your night will be
spent in a fly camp.
Day 4
After breakfast, you proceed with your trek, passing the
scenic Terere and Sendeo peaks. The 6 hours hike takes you
up to 4600m reaching the alpine dessert and down again to
Shipton's Camp at 4200m. Overnight will be at the Shipton 's
Hut where the Mackinders Valley starts.
Day5
Your climb continues taking you round the peaks of Nellion
and Batian, via Hausberg and Nanyuki Tarn to Two Tarn Hut.
Two screeds up to 4600m will have to be passed. Lunch will
be at the two Tarn Hut after which the hike continues down
to Mackinder's Camp at 4200m in the Teleki Valley. Overnight
will be at the Teleki Hut.
Day 6
After an early morning breakfast at 4.00 am, the trek leads
via a steep screed to the Austrian Hut at 4790m. Here there
will be a short break before the final ascend to point
Lenana (4895m) via Lewis Glacier.
You will descend on the northern side via Simba Cole to the
Mintos Hut (4200m) for lunch and continue down on the
Chogoria route, passing on the ridge of the Gorge valley
that overlooks Lake Michaelson. Overnight will be in tents
at the carport (3300m).
Day 7
Today you descend to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas at 3000m
where 4 X 4 vehicles will be waiting to take you to Chogoria.
Here you will have lunch, bid the crew good bye and meet
your driver for the transfer to Nairobi or your other onward
destination
6 Days
Naromoru Down Chogoria
Day 1. Nairobi/Mt Kenya
Depart Nairobi in the morning arriving Naromoru in
time for lunch. After lunch you proceed to Mt Kenya
Youth Hostel for dinner and overnight.
Day 2. Met Station
After breakfast, proceed to Naromoru Park Gate and
start hiking to Met Station (3300m). The hiking takes
about 3 hrs. Dinner and overnight.
Day 3. Mackinders Camp
Depart Met Station after breakfast and proceed to
Teleki Valley arriving Mackinders Camp (4300m) early
evening. Picnic lunch enroute. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4. Austrian Camp
Depart after breakfast commence ascending along a
steep screw to Austrian Hut (4700m). Covering this
distance takes about 3 hrs. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5. Point Lenana-Chogoria
Departing at 5:30 am, proceed through Lewis
Glacier to Point Lenana (4985m) arriving approx. 6:30
am in the morning. After the sunrise, descend down to
Mintos Hut for full breakfast. Later descend along the
famous Gorges Valley to Chogoria campsite. Dinner and
overnight.
Day 6. Chogoria- Nairobi
After breakfast, set on morning journey to
Chogoria (32km). Walk for 15 km to be met by a 4WD
vehicle for the rest of the journey to Chogoria from
where transport is provided back to Nairobi, arriving
late afternoon.

Sirimon out Chogoria(5
Days/4 nights
Day 1. Nairobi/Nanyuki
Depart Nairobi mid morning for Nanyuki arriving in time for
lunch. The afternoon is spent in this area for
acclimatization. Dinner and overnight in a budget hotel.
Day 2. Old Moses Camp
After breakfast, drive to Sirimon Park Gate. After Check-in
start hiking through the Rain Forest for 9 km to Old Moses
camp (3300m). Dinner and overnight.
Day 3. Shipton Camp
Depart Old Moses Camp at 7:30 am via Mackinders Valley to
Shipton Camp (4200m). The distance takes 6 to 7 hrs. Dinner
and overnight.
Day 4. Point Lenana- Chogoria
Early morning departure (3:00 am) to the summit, a walk that
takes 3 hrs to point Lenana (4985m) arriving at 6:30 in the
morning. After sunrise, descend to Mintos Hut for full
breakfast and later proceed down through the Gorges valley to
Chogoria Bandas and campsite. Dinner and overnight.
Day 5. Chogoria/Nairobi
After breakfast, set on morning journey to Chogoria (32km).
4WD vehicles are provided but during bad weather, climbers may
have to walk some disance as vehicles may not reach the Bandas.
From Chogoria transport is provided back to Nairobi, arriving
late afternoon.

Mount Kenya National Park
Mt. Kenya National Park is located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175km North-East of Nairobi. The ecosystem lies in Central and Eastern provinces of Kenya. At 5,199m the mountain is the second highest peak in Africa. Mt. Kenya is an important water tower in the country. It provides water for about 50% of the country’s population and produces 70% of Kenya’s hydroelectric power.
UNESCO inscribed Mount Kenya as a World Heritage Site. It’s described as one of the most impressive landscapes in Eastern Africa with its rugged glacier-clad summits, Afro-alpine moorlands and diverse forests that illustrate outstanding ecological processes.
The attraction of Mount Kenya include impressive landscape, rugged glacier clad summit, afro alpine moorland, forests, wildlife and over 800 recorded plant species of which 81 species are endemic to the area. Mount Kenya is the only free standing mountain in the world with permanent glaciers.
Mount Kenya has three major climbing routes, this include Sirimon route, Chogoria route and Narumoru Route. Accommodation is inform of mountain huts, one can also camp around the mountain huts and use the mountain huts facilities.
